    What operating system?

    In XP:
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive to check.
Find the "Tools" tab at the top and the first option is "check this drive for errors".

Say yes and check the box for "find and fix file system errors"- it'll say it can't work with Windows open and do you want to perform the test on the next reboot.
    Say yes and then reboot.

Test will run in DOS mode before finally booting back to the desktop.

    Done.
