How about the ancient Scottish one from The Arbroath Declaration of 1320

For as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Nice quote, I'll leafve it in there for now, but 2 things:

    1) who was it said by (i'm guessing you don't know, since it's "ancient")

    2) something shorter perhaps? it's not the whole die for your country thing, i mean i'm doing a composition for cadets , i don't think cadets should be thinking about dieing for their country....

It was sent to the Pope by Robert the Bruce after defeating the English in the wars of independence. It was signed by his Barons. It was unique in that it set out that the King's responsibility was to his people and could be removed if he failed them (as opposed to the Dvine Right of Kings view held by other Monarchs)

The Pope had on the request of the English King excommunicated the entire Scottish people. The Pope was moved by the Declaration and re-instated the Scots and told the English King to STFU!

    How about

It is not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fight, but for freedom.

Thanks biggles I put that in, and it ties in nicely with what I was trying to say. I'll have to read up on my history, don't know too much about Scotland's war of independence (that's what it is I am assuming, correct me if I'm wrong please) sounds quite interesting.

Whilst (very) loose with the facts regarding romantic interest (and scant on some of the political ones) Gibson's Braveheart movie covers the main early battles from about 1300 onwards reasonably accurately.

The closing scene when the new leader shouts "You bled with Wallace will you bleed with me?" is actually the beginning of Robert the Bruces successful campaign in 1314 which led to the declaration above 6 years later.

jij moet me n ding beloven
laat me nog lang in mijn dromen geloven

    Mr Patrick Murphy

"never let it be said, that i said never let it be said."

The above was done in an irish accent.
