I can't believe Legend of Zelda, FFVII, or Myst haven't been mentioned yet.

things are quiet until hitler decides he'd like to invade russia
    so, he does
the russians are like "OMG WTF D00DZ, STOP TKING"
and the germans are still like "omg ph34r n00bz"
the russians fall back, all the way to moscow
and then they all begin h4xing, which brings on the russian winter
the germans are like "wtf, h4x"

i keep thinking zelda, but there's not too much revolutionary about it. it's just a really really good game.

    ...rethink...

ocarina of time was a massive free roaming world with sidequests and such, before gta3

Legend of Zelda: A link to the past for the SNES is definitely one.

Zelda was ok, Some of the puzzles were good, but some were annoying. I liked Windwaker the most.

A lot of the hallmarks of RPGs definitely got their start with Zelda. The first one. The one for NES. No, it's not as flashy as GTA3 (which, really, isn't that revolutionary), but games that are forerunners are always built upon.
