Have you tried resetting it to factory settings, to go back to it's "out of the box" state. Then switching on security from there.

Security should be either on or off, you shouldn't really be able to have it in two states at the same time.

We are talking about encryption here aren't we, as opposed to the administrators password for changing the router's settings.

Wireless routers are great. No-one seems to secure them properly here, it seems I get free internet access wherever I go.

Mine is secure, 64bit WEP. It can be much more secure but I figured that would be plenty.

However there are a couple of others within range which aren't

I don't really know why people don't secure them, it's a pice of pish to set up.

Whilst typing this I realized I could probably access their wireless networks, switch security on (they wouldn't know the encryption key), set up a password for accessing the router settings and wait for them to spend a fortune on premium rate calls to technical support.

But that wouldn't be nice, would it fromage.

192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 would normally do it.

God forbid they actually just give it the ole hard reset.

Actually I agree with you that some knucklehead would call tech support rather than giving it the hard reset. However, I don't know about the "fortune" in tech support calls though. The call would last all of 10 seconds....or should I say, "should".

Bet it wouldn't, at £1/minute ($27). If some geptard phoned they would keep them on for a good wee time before saying "press a needle into the wee hole marked reset"

Anyway, on some routers which are secure encrypted and password protected the hard reset button won't work. Before you tell me that's pish, it isn't, I've seen it. You can get round it, but just pressing the hard reset won't work.

should have gotten a linksys wrt54g. you can run "third party" firmware AKA hacked firmware.

Hardware thread

I've been told by my ISP that to upgrade to a 2meg line, I have to get a router instead of this modem because it can only handle a 1024 connection.

It's free and all but making hardware changes is just asking for trouble.

Indeed, but I haven't lost my mind recently, so why would I do such a stupid thing.
