Thread: Downloading The Fast Way

1. #61
here is also a KILLER way to speed up your downloads if you have KAZUPERNODES. If the trick that Paul suggested still doesnt boost your speed enough, then try this. go into KAZUPERNODES and select 'extract supernode list from .DAT file'. Choose the .DAT file that is the file that is downloading slowly. Check the response time and status of the list and connect to the supernode that has the lowest number for the response time. Your downloading speed for this file should drastically increase because now you are finding better sources to download from. TRY IT, IT WERKS GREAT!!!

Here are a few tips :

1: Move your computer closer to your phone box.

2: If you can, have your phone company remove the digital splitter from the side of your house. It's possible that the previous owner of the house or the landlord or a previous renter had two phone lines. Sometimes when a phone customer changes from two phone lines back to two, they just leave the digital splitter attached to the house. Get friendly with the phone tech like I did and he took the box off because I complained that my 56k speeds were below what they should be. Ask the phone repair guy/gal to "go back to straight copper". They should know what that means. Your country may vary.

3: Use new phone cords. If your phone cord is super long or cracked with age or otherwise looking beat up, then swap it out. Experiment with the phone cords you have plugged into your modem. Keep track of your net speeds with date and times listed in a text file to compare.

4: Change ISP's if you can. Ask your neighbors what they get for speed.

5: Max your RAM out. (Said before).

6: Hit yourself in the head with a hammer. Brain damage will slow you down so your surfing and downloading will appear faster ! *smile

Getting your neigbors ISP isnt a good because the more people that have the same ISP makes your connection slower....its better to get a small company ISP that not many people have. And DSL is horrible. Cable is the best connection.

I was implying that if you try a few other ISP's then you can figure better if the one you currently have is faster. And small companies can be just as congested as big companies. It depends on your city and how far you are from the phone company and it depends on if your cable internet provides good speed for the dollar. And if you ask your neighbor, who has a similar system as yours, what their modem speed is compared to yours, it still might be worth it to use the one they have, if it is much faster than yours for the same price.

>>>And DSL is horrible. Cable is the best connection.>>>

Please explain your theory.

Just to add a little - for those wondering about speed boost differences between dial-up (56k,etc) and broadband (dsl, cable, etc).

The (potential) speed boost can so easily be explained thru the "milkshake-thru-a-straw" theory.

The bigger your original straw, the (better) the potential boost when more data streams in.

This should help explain why some people get 50kb+ boost compared to (much) less for dial-up.

Just my 2c.

I have a couple of tips that might help someone out.

1st
I notice when I first installed k-lite++ it would ask what type of network connection do you have? phone, cable & t1. I would always choose fast cable-which is the one that I have. It would always tell me I had 28Kb to share for my uploads but I never reach that amount (apx 24 KB). That's right!!!! The other day I chose t1. Not only did it give me 28 Kb for uploads but at sometimes it would stay constant at 32Kb. It also increase my downloads a little.

You can play around and tweek your file page, swap file etc. If you have not done this before there is a program called MEM TURBO II IT WILL DO THIS AUTOMATIC FOR YOU. You should have at least
256 MB RAM

I TRIED THE SEARCH FOR MORE SOURCES AND IT WORKS FOR BETTER DOWNLOADS. I ALSO TRIED THE ZUPERNODE AND THAT WORKS ALSO B)

OK, if you hotshots can hold back from blasting me for asking a dumb newcomer question... Paul, when you say "Now start the download," do you mean to download all 10 sources (or however many you find)? Also, regarding rare files, does it do any good to keep searching for them if you don't get ANY hits? Thanks.
