    Why don't you get the NEC? We've been recommending it for quite some time.

    yeah, I know, and had considered it, but.....
    my best results in the past had been with a Liteon
    (CDRW, not DVDRW, but I guess I just have to try it)

    the HP is a re-badged NEC (2500a)
    maybe that fact made my wary of getting another?

    I do think though that HP fucked it up in one way or another,
    so I can't really say that I blame NEC

    and....I will be buying another RW,
    perhaps it will be the 3550, unless the Liteon really impresses me,
    or I have oodles of cash to spare for a Plextor


    here's the Liteon, fresh out of the box....



    btw, anyone have a clue as to why my IDE channels read wrong?
    channels 1:2 and 1:3? what the hell? should be 1:0 and 1:1
    I'm thinking it's because of old virtual drives, but that's just a guess.....
