My brother's computer used to lock up and stuff when it tried to load up thumbnails of movies and stuff, switching to list view helped there.

If it isn't a virus you could try and do that, to see if something happens when windows tries to preview stuff.

I'd say it's a virus, tho', never heard of problem exactly like yours. Did you make sure you formatted all drives in there properly?

But just in case it's a weird case of northbridge-overheating (can cause file-corruption, tho' I never heard of it doing something this specific) or something: check the cooling on your mobo, if there's a small fan on top of the northridge, make sure it spins. Also try running memtest, bad sticks of memory can cause data-corruption.

Also make sure that the drive itself is ok.

Might as well try some weird stuff, if you made absolutely certain it wasn't a virus or a hacker.

And did you install anything weird before it started doing this?

AVG is not worth a light, I'm afraid, so you can't say with certainty that you don't have a virus.
Scan your system with a better AV product (NOD32 or Kaspersky highly recommended).

Personally, I think your HDD's on the way out.

my 1st hdd (the one that works) is a few years old, but the seagate 160 gb (the corrupted one) I got last summer . Ill dl nod32/kaspersky. thanks. Ill also try a memtest.

From what I remember, it started when I installed dvdfab. after installing it, you have to install a registry addition to get dvdfab to work. Could that be it? Could it be the registry?

I did, and I forgot to mention what it said.

'Errors Found. CHKDSK cannot not continue in read-only mode.'

what do I do? how do I schedule for it to run at startup, and whats seatools?

I would have chkdsk try to repair/recover the bad sectors

    example:

    chkdsk d: /r

    or use Seatools

'Errors Found. CHKDSK cannot not continue in read-only mode.'
    you didn't give it a fix/recovery command
in cmd prompt that's the /r or /f tags
in gui there's some checkboxes for them

it took me about 10 mins to fully startup my pc today.

I got 1 error at startup ( I think it might be from nod32):

this one was during ckdsk, I tried opening my 2nd hdd (corrupt one):
