Yes its illegal to share, and its illegal to have a copy of something you didnt pay for.

So my question is... two fold...

    1. If you have a movie on your pc right, say daredevil, and they buy the dvd, does that mpg on your pc become legal for you to have? Or does the DMCA make that illegal too?

    2. If you have the DVD first, and then get a copy of the file off the net, is that illegal?

doesnt the *gay * DMCA *gay*, make it illegal to cirumvent any digital encryption, or copyright? if so, then both of my questions are prolly yes, they are illegal.

    any one know for sure?
hmm last i checked your legaly entitled to own a back up copy of any physicaly stored media (cd, dvd, casette etc...) so provided they cant tell when you downloaded a film, and when you bought it on dvd then number 1 would be legal... for number 2 same applies... you buy the DVD, rip it and back it up on your PC and maybe burn it to a few CDs or DVDs ... so long as they are PERSONAL use only its perfectly legal ... its only when you share your braking the law... but like everyone says... who gives a fk? no ones gonna catch you

Practically everything on Kazaa is illegal. Many people download full albums off Kazaa, then burn em on CDs. If this was legal, people would be able to walk into a music store, pick up and CD, and just walk out with it. It's practically the same thing, either way you get a muisc CD you didn't pay for.

AAAHHHH, ignorance truely is bliss, is it not?
Of course "sharing a file " on Kazzaa is illegal.
It isn't theft, it is copyright infringement (thanks, JmiF).
While there may be safety in numbers the threat of "getting caught" DOES exist and a casual perusal of the newspapers will show increasing numbers of casualties.
I certainly don't want to sound alarmist but at least wake up and protect yourselves.

I myself have wrapped my computer in tin foil to shield it from the X-rays of the RIAA satellites...

    I looked it up...

and technically, under the DMCA... it is illegal to copy/back up your own personal dvds, and software, and cds that are digitally encrypted... bullshit isnt it...

If you have to bypass security, or encryption to do it, your breaking the law, check this article... Write up about DMCA and dvds

currently many people are pushing for changes in the DMCA, as for just that, it doesnt allow for personal back up copies, which many say violates the supreme courts ruling of "fair use", years ago... read up on it... very intresting.

Yes, tis illegal, but as i look at the bottom of K-lite now, I can see that there are 3,765,687 people sharing 6,468,608 Gbs of data, most of it illegal. There is no way they can catch 4 million people, the only thing they really care about catching is child pornography, and rightly so.

The only reason i use Kazaa is because i do not have much money, and do not want to be ripped off. Here in the UK, it is getting beyond belief. 40 quid for a game? 15 for an album? Convert that into dollars, its one hell of a lot of money. I only pay if i believe that the people who made the product deserve my money, i.e. if Guns and roses bought out a new album, id buy it, because i am a fan and want to support them and their music. I am planning to buy "enter the matrix" (the game) becuase i believe they have put sufficient effort into it. The same way i am planning to see both the matrix movies, and the final LOTR movie, because I ma happy to support them.

I know many who do the same, and as a musician, this is how i would want it to be done

I will happily stop downloading if prices are lowered and we get the products at the price we deserve them
