This morning, Patrick Kennedy says he smacked a barrier with his car, slurred his speech, staggered and had booze-breath while trying to cast a floor vote at 2:45 in the morning because he took an incautious mixture of prescribed drugs for gastroenteritus; he also contends he "didn't ask for preferential treatment" by Capital cops, who gave him a ride home without any sobriety or alcohol testing.
This afternoon, he says he has a problem with painkillers and is immediately checking himself into the Mayo Clinic for dependency treatment, and disavows any memory whatsoever of last night's incident.
Has he been consulting with his father, Edward M. Kennedy?
Perhaps Theodore Sorensen?
Pierre Salinger?
Did he channel Mary Jo Kopechne, by any chance?

As far as I have seen the only suggestion of "booze" being involved as of this moment is speculation from right wing pundits....got a source for this?
As with Rush the addiction needs treatment, not punishment.....however....... If he was driving under the influence of anything that adversly affects his physical ability to drive then he should be charged with the appropriate traffic law, addiction is not a defense.
I have been grining at the faux outrage by the likes of Malkin that a lawmaker could drive while impaired.... still it gave them something to do while ignoring the new "watergate" etc.
wonder how rush will deal with this
it’s an election with no Democrats, in one of the whitest states in the union, where rich candidates pay $35 for your votes. Or, as Republicans call it, their vision for the future.
I have no idea how Rush will/would treat this...what struck me is how, in the space of several hours of (presumably documentable) non-addled behavior today, the Representative has swung from the stance of "It was all an unfortunate and unintended incident" to "I have no recollection whatsoever of the incident, but I have a substance abuse problem and will seek treatment immediately", and how much this reminds me of the flexo-bendy version of events implemented by his father in 1969.Originally Posted by vidcc

You don't find this curious?

As I was responding to you the first time I Had insanity and colmes on and they were discussing this. It was extra fun because they had Ann Coultard as a guest. oddly enough she brought up the father then complained then Bush was brought up. "you had to look back all that time to find something?" she asked and made this rant about the kennedys getting "preferential treatment" because of "who they are"..... Unable to accept that Bush got special treatment or that the DC police treat all lawmakers with a softer approach than joe citizen would get.
Rush was brought up and they claimed "but he is innocent and has not been convicted of anything" while pronouncing kennedy guilty as speculated.
It was a classic even for them.
The "evolving and clarifying" version of events is pretty standard for any public figure and I am surprised you find it curious at all to be honest.
I think it's refeshing to hear about a lawmaker under the influence of anything other than a lobbyist

I think Patrick Kennedy is full of shit.
He now checks in to Mayo Health Clinic for addiction to presciption drugs....'CAUSE GOT CAUGHT!
Has he been charged with the appropriate traffic citations? He could killed someone and this shouldn't be takin' lightly.
Frankly, fuck all the presciption drugs shit. I think he was drunk driving, Simple and plain.
The cops shoulda beathalized him at the scene.I hate when politicians get off lightly.
How disappointing it is to hear someone so independent and fair-minded avail himself of such uninspired, trite and selective name-calling of as you've just done (and not for the first time, either).Originally Posted by vidcc

BTW-what is this "preferential treatment" of Bush (by capital/DC police) you refer to?
It also occurs to me Cynthia McKinney might take exception to your statement.

She struck an officer....a bit different from a traffic accident involving nobody else..... I doubt if someone was injured the kennedy treatment would be the sameOriginally Posted by j2k4

The point is that he got preferential treatment, vid.Originally Posted by vidcc
The cops said they smelled booze on his breath ffs.
He should have a DWI on his record but now he somehow plays the "Oh I wasn't drunk. I was on drugs...prescription drugs" crap.
He's full of shit. Now I know he's a crackhead and a drunk.
