as others have said, it is because there are less leechers on private sites, especially after some time. try to download something new, you will be able to seed that well. pay attention to the number of leeches indicated on the torrent's details page.

If your searching for a better ratio, just stay on the Browse section of a private site. Have a peek on it every hour or so, if something pops up new - regardless of whether you want it or not. Download it while there is only 3-4 seeders, and lots of leechers. You'll soon get it up

The same question goes for me. On the usenet (newsgroup) I downloaded 8 gigs in 12 hours or so. I just downloaded 8 gigs from torrents and it took 4 days.

I have a decent cable connection. What download speeds should I expect. What client should I use?

It all depends on what tracker you're using.

I usually download the TV show LOST every week since I'm at work when it comes on. With TorrentSpy, it takes a couple hours, but with Supertorrents it only takes about 10 minutes and the quality is better.

I've found that with private trackers that the download speeds are incredibly faster, but you'll seeds for a month to get a 1:1 in return.

MY SOLUTION: I found a version of uTorrent (1.51 I think) that doesn't report the download info to the tracker. I personally have about a 2:1 ratio overall, but not so much with the private trackers I use. Some are better than others. You just have to experiment with what works for you.

So what do you consider to be a "good" download speed? The best I ever got was about 250.

I am in the UK with a 1 Mbit down and 250Kbit up. I use utorrent 1.5 - this is very close to bitcomet in look and feel and works well and will be needed for nearly all provate trackers.

I regularly download and up load at full line speed - that means about 120KBytes down and 30 ish KBytes up - don't mix up your bits and bytes with the numbers b = bits and B=bytes.

Do not forget you cannot upload stuff if other people don't want it. To keep your ratio up get on torrents early even if you don't want them - porn and games work well for me the kids always want them.

Public trackers are ok but you can be left in the lurch - I cannot tell you how many 99.7 DLs I have.

ISOHUNT.com is a great site to use and so is thepiratebay.org.

Best thing is just work on it (your ratio).
