Ok, my DVD drive sudently disapeared from 'My PC' after the system crashed with Nero.
So I did the normal procedure for this kind of error (code39 I think), but in the middle of my dispare,
I whent and disconected the drive trying to get it to re-install itself.
The problem started when I forgot wich cable was that I disconected, or at least I believe so,
cus just when I was reconecting it, the PC turned off, and this peculiar 'bad news' smell (burned device smell) fill the room.
For a moment I thought I had burned my poor PC, but after a few trys I was able to turne it On again and here I am.
But the DVD Drive doesn't do anything.

My question is, if the Drive was burned as I think,
can I still test it in my other PC?, or am I at risk of ending up with two fried PCs?
    is it safe?

    *by 'Burn' I mean a short-circuited.

i wouldnt try it in another computer, is it a dvd burner, because that would be normal (hahah had to say it) um also, just replace it, no biggie. I dont think you should have had a problem hooking it up again but in the case that you did burnout something in your dvd drive then just replace it unless you want to try it, just plug it in, immediatly turn off your computer if you smell anything
check for the power on light on the dvd rom drive, if all boots normal, than you turn off, plug in ide and your good to go

Did you actually do the connection while the power was on?

    What did you incorrectly connect?

    Yes, he did!

NEVER connect or disconnect hardware whilst the power is ON, turn it OFF first, you're lucky you didn't fry the whole pc and yourself!
Put a new burner on your shopping list.

    what he said

i had a lose fan (4pin) and the end it was plugged in 2 burn its self just cos it was abit loose, so plugging in and unplugging a drive cant do any good 2 the pc.

u could of just gone 2 devicemanager and uninstalled the drive then windows would of picked it up again once u click scan for new hardware.

btw, u might wanna ask ur friend be4 trying anything again or atleast ask here, u might end up frying urself.
