Most of my life I've had to deal with spiders and rodents, since I live in a rural area. I'd suggest getting a cat too, since mine kept the buildings relatively mouse-free (when he didn't go in one any longer it was completely infested within a couple months). But that's not always a feasible option, and some cats simply aren't interested or any good with hunting. Some dogs will kill mice if you're more of a dog person, most notably terriers. Peppermint and eucalyptus oil also work if you want to avoid poisons. If you've not got properly sealed windows and doors, or if your concrete has cracks in it, they'll just squeeze in.
Of course there is always the option of trapping (either live or not).
