There is a red shield at the bottom left hand corner that keeps notifying me that firewall and automatic update is turned off.. may someone please tell me how to permanently get rid of this icon and its notification?

Not to hard just go to start / control panel / security centre then in the left hand side in the resources pane go to the last one which says change the way security centre alerts me then untick the boxes and press ok should get rid of it

A better idea would be to install a firewall and enable automatic updates.
