Thread: Really confused about newsgroupss

  1. #1

    Question Mark

Ok so i followed the instructions on the GrabIt and set it up and things and used my ISPs (PlusNet) access thing and i updated the lists thing and then when i got to the section "look for "alt.binaries" there was only one and it wasn't really what i was looking for...do i have to use the alt.binaries? can i use the others? whats the reason for using the alt.binaries?

Also if i am looking for a specific file do i have to plow through 100s of groups and look through them or is there a indexing solution thing like TorrentSpy?

Generally i am really confused about newsgroups any help would be appricated...also if thats all i am getting from my ISP thing does it mean i have to pay for another one newgroup server access thing???

Most ISP's have discontinued the "alt.binaries" groups from their service and only carry the text groups now which is pretty much useless.
Chances are this is the situation for you and you are going to have to sign up with a pay service.

I would suggest signing up for a trial account 1st to make sure you are going to actually use it and not waste your money on lengthy pay services.

Here is a site that offers unlimited use for 3 days for $3:
    http://www.usenetserver.com/

If you want to "study" up on the groups here is a good site that has a really good walkthrough:

If you have any questions after reading that guide feel free to ask away

stylus is right, you'll find that isp's have different lists of newsgroups. also, even if they have a particular newsgroup, there is no guarantee that it has anything in it. again, this is particular to an isp. newsgoups reside on a news server which has a isp defined size of storage (ie, 5 GB) and retention (ie, how long files stay on news server). think of it as a cup filling up and it overflows .. when it overflows, you can't get the overflowed stuff anymore.

I have used another tutorial in the past at www.canadianalien.com which might help you too.

You might also want to try a premium news server provider. If you do, you will set it up just as you did your current isp's news server in Grabit. Note that accessing a premium news server provider is likely going to be slower downloading than via your isp's news server because your isp is direct to you via their dsl or cable wire, while the premium news server provider is coming to you via the internet.

    Good luck.

I've seen a couple a while back but they were extremely limited in regards to connectivity and the groups they would allow you to browse.

Your way better off just getting a pay service. Just try it out for a month or 2. It takes some time to learn the ways of Usenet but once you have it figured out you won't turn back.

I'm a little relucant to pay for a newsgroup service as say i bought access for a month i might accutally only download 2/3 different things...Is there any that offer a free trail for a week or even a few day? I might decide its worth it if i can get maxed out...

Trust us you will max out your connection and its well worth the price...

I pay £52 for 6months 8connections unlimited and I have an 8Mb line and download at about 6+Mbps...

Go for it... Others just fall behined when it comes to content security and speed.
