Driver for External Enclosure

I'm looking for drivers for 3.5" external enclosure.

I can't seem to find it. I hope someone can help.

edit: Now that I think about it, are you sure it can't work with built-in drivers in XP? It should be detected just as a standard removable disk I would think.

No I haven't sent an email yet. I figured that the driver must be available online and would try here first.

The device is detected by Windows XPSP2 but it shows as a yellow exclamation point in the device manager and requires a driver.

Hi VB, here is a suggestion......
I have several hd enclosures, usb's and combo's 200 to 400gb
no drivers used, to get it to work.....
do not turn on unit till after boot
then your usb hub
(in windows)....will find it...it see it as a usb device.

when windows does a scan(what do you want to do?)
click on folders
this will take you to drive list, as windows will assign your
new enclosure as another attached hd.

some manufactures include a disk with drivers
that do proprietary stuff....as backup drive...etc.
it limits the drive and its use.
I use these hard drives(enclosures) to store videos,mp3's, etc.
more as a resource, rather than a dynamic drive.

There's some good points there.

I always power the drive up while it's not connected, then connect it afterwards. Don't know if it makes a difference, I've never tried.

Well I don't have the drive on hand right now. It belongs to a friend who brought it to me earlier but has taken it back now.

I did power the enclosure only while windows was up and running. Windows detected it right away but with an error saying that the device wouldn't function properly. That's when I went to the device manager and noticed the yellow (!) under USB devices.

I also tried the drive connected directly to IDE and I created an NTFS partiotion and formatted it (maxtor 160GB). So the drive works. I then put the drive back into the enclosure and still get the same results. Maybe there's something wrong with the IDE to USB interface. I'll try it again (maybe tomorrow) if I get the thing back from my friend.

Maybe I missed it. But how about power the external drive then boot into XP. Then a reboot with external still powered. From then on. To turn off power off computer, then power off external drive. To turn on power on external drive, then boot computer. This usually works. It's the turning on & off in reverse of this that causes problems ime.
