The name of the sport is first. Just saw your "read it wrong" statement, you Canucker.

    Noice.

    We have the Bowie Baysox

    up the road from here.

For me Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia are all local. Bowie is in Maryland.

Baltimore, Maryland is slightly farther to be considered local (about 40 minutes).

Now that I think of it, we have more stadiums and arenas than I previously remember.

The Washington Nationals (previously the Montreal Expos) and DC United play at RFK Stadium (where the Redskins used to play). Now the Redskins play at FedExField in Landover, MD and the Nats will have a new stadium (being built now) in 2008 near the dirty southeast DC water. I heard there's talk of a new soccer stadium near there also.

Poplar Point Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium planned for the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It is expected to seat 27,000 spectators at a site across the Anacostia River from the Washington Nationals' planned ballpark. It will house the D.C. United Major League Soccer franchise. The expected cost is around US$40 million and is yet to be finalized by Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber. The land at the proposed site is currently owned by the federal government and would have to be transferred to the city or D.C. United before construction of the stadium can begin. The site, called Poplar Point, is Metro-accessible via the Anacostia station.

The stadium is to be part of a planned mixed-use development that would also include a hotel, offices, housing, and retail. The target date for completion is 2009
    2009? Hell no.

    Proposed Nats stadium

notice the blue water. That's bullshit.

Before I started taking the subway, I drove over that bridge (on the bottom) every day.

The problem I see with both stadiums is that soccer and baseball aren't that popular in the DC area. While having them will make DC a very attractive spot the Olympics, it ain't smart money otherwise. Washington previously had a baseball team called the Senators which didn't do well marketwise. Studies haved cited that baseball isn't that popular with black folk and DC is basically Chocolate City. I imagine that the soccer idea is there because DC United is MLS' most successful team.

Why the hell do soccer names have United, Real, and FC in it? Real = Royal? FC = Football club? United = United Kingdom or United States?
