Found this extension by accident , I was looking for an email notifier . Thought hey thats a good idea ,was wondering if someone could recommend a few more .
I have an account with Demonoid.com but did n't see many hits with this add on ,so thought I 'd ask here .

some of the private sites and public ones use to have an RSS feed which i belive you can use to be notified when something is put up and then have a client like utorrent download it.
I never used it so I cant really explain the process, but I do know that they are supported by some sites and usally each indivual site has its own unique notifier program or plug-in.
You can usally find a link to them on the sites forums.

This might not be what your after but if you want to search public torrent sites try this http://torrentscan.com/ I haven't used it in a while but it searches the most popular public sites as far as private sites go kind of hard to search them as they require a log on to browse the torrents...though if someone knows of a site/program that can search private sites I'd be interested
