Thread: Increase Line Gain

1. #11
perhaps i wasn't clear. a 1 meg uncompressed file (like wav or txt) would be faster to download on a 56 k than a compressed file like zip or mp3. this is because while the 56k is downloading, it compresses the data being transferred (not exactly sure how it does it) so in effect the 1 mb uncompressed file turns into a 500 or 700 kb file still being transffered at whatever speed it is. the maximum physical speed is still 7kb/s (in North america it's actually around 6.2 because of the limitation for fear of interference; sk8punk151 was at least right about that plus overhead so don't expect over 6 and realistically, if you have extremelly high-quality phone lines in your house and between you and the provider, you can expect 5 kb+) back to what i was saying, both 1 MB of uncompressed and compressed data still transfers at the maximum but it will seem like the 1 MB uncompressed will transfer at a much faster speed because of the modem compression. This is quite useless for faster speeds however and was removed in high-speed modems because there are very few files that are uncompressed and the amount of compression achieved probably doesn't play a significant role when your transferring at 80 KB/s +

lol? I have been using computers for 10 years. I know plenty. hah. I am not gullible and I know my connection speed and my modem. Just because I can get fast speeds and you can't doesnt mean shit. You don't have to be a smart ass about it either.. Oh, and talking shit online is for pussys my friend.

The only 'n00b' here is you. You only have 8 post and already are beggining to talk shit and act like a smart ass.

Now I am confused, if you get like 23kb/s on a 56k bps, why the hell did I pay for 256k bps DSL about a year back when all that it could do is around 24kb/s on a good day?? Hehe

Anyway from my information
A V.90 protocol 56k bps modem can can reach it's max physical limit of 7kb/s without problem, but FCC limits the lines to maximum downstream speed of 53k bps which is 6.625kb/s. So getting speed over 6.625kb/s on a 56k bps modem is unlikely and speeds over 7kb/s literally impossible.

The fastest I have ever seen my 56k download is 23.50 kb/s and it stayed at that speed for a good 10 mins.. It was real late at night and usually I can reach speeds over 10.00 kb/s if its late at night and if I am downloading a particulary large file
I for one can believe what sk8punk151 says. Some of us have had quite a different 56k experiences.
Like just once, I downloaded 'The Exorcist' (400mb) in 30 minutes, through ordinary 56k. I dont know if it was the voltage, or some kind of buffer mix up, but the file was complete and perfect...

I posted this tip about 3 months ago.I'm on 56k in England and after BT turned up the gain on my line my speed was and still is alot more constant then it was before. So give it a try,its not illegal here in England to do.

lol
But the download speed would have to be average of around 228kb/s for that! I am not saying you lie, but this makes me more puzzled than anything I ever heard before. I mean the MODEM itself should not be able to go that high, even if the lines would. I guess this is another one of the "unsolved mysteries"..

Hi,

do you have to ring them from the line you want it turning up on or can you ring them and tell them the number of another line you want it turning up on?

Cheers

I rang them from my line but i'm sure if you have the billing details for the number then they would turn it up from any number.

i'm a n00b cause i only have 8 posts on this forum? wow... thanks for telling me. i guess the hundreds of posts on other hardware forums and warez forums don't count for anything. you stay on your 56k then if you think you can download at anything over 7 Kbytes/s. Instead of talking bull, why don't you post a screenshot of your download halfway through and still downloading over 7 KBytes/s because we all now (well you might not) that most download accelerators don't report the correct speed for the first part of the download. better yet, i'll send you my ftp info, and you download a file of your choosing. since my max upload is 20 KBytes consistent, this should be more than enough to prove you wrong.

you know, sk8punk151 and isuru would be those kind of people who would believe you if you told them they could go faster than the speed of light
