I'm in the situation where I want to use my university's insanely fast upload speed to...upload.
I was doing a speed test on one of their computer labs; using their connection, the uploads ran at 2 megabytes per second. Now, I installed utorrent, set it up as if I were at my house, disabled their software firewall(norton), and began a torrent. No matter what torrent I tried, or what tracker, I kept getting 0.0kb/s upload rate, utorrent said i was not connectable and the port test said it was not open.

Any idea how I can get around this?
    Alright.

It all depends on how the university have there network configured, you could try using a diffrent port for a start see if they are all blocked.

    Connecting from University

    Tunneling

Pretty easy to configure for most software, to use their high speed tunnel server there's a $5 per month fee. I used it when my ISP were throttling all BT traffic. You can try the slower speed server's for free before purchase too :-D

    user reply:

I made some tunnels last year:

I don't know how to tunnel to a windows server directly though

What I did was - got a dreamhost.com L1 account ($22 for a year if you use the promo code STARSSS) http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html

Then get hold of putty http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

    To use torrents directly:

In host name enter your websites addess i.e. zuczek.com

Then go to ssh--> tunnels and enter source port as 80 click dynamic and click add - then open and log into the ssh session when it asks

Then set your torrent client to use the proxy localhost: 80 - then it should work fine

Been a while since I did this it might be 8080 not 80

To connect to a dedicated server

In SSH --> Tunnels enter 3390 as source port and destination port as serverip:3389 and click open enter login etc.

Remote Desktop Connection should work now

^Thats the basic principle I think I remembered everything right

    user reply:

From the info from above and google, i got it working and verified it with a sshd on lan

Open Putty, insert your server's dns in the host box, go ahead and save your session

now go to the SSH>Tunnels, source port is the local port you will be connecting to, enter Destination as *.* and Select Dynamic, now go back to the session windows, resave your session.

Now click Open, and login to your shell, minimize putty

Change your torrent clients connection to socks5, localhost and the port you chose, as for the listening port pick one that your server has open

    hope it works.

HTTP-Tunnel worked on my uni conection, i didn't try the paid service but i think it'll work... i used to download from RS and other direct HTTP links u could try that two.

And another thing, if u wanna use the 2nd method u should make sure that your uni allows u to ssh using telnet a friend of mine had some shell account and he couldn't access it... just a thought so you wouldn't buy a connection and then find out u can't access it
