i think my IE got infected with some virus, when i run it it takes me to some freakin site (http://w*w.uptodateprotection.net/), any idea how to remove the hijack.

Upgrade to IE7.

scan with HiJackThis and post the results here...i can tell you what to delete..scanning your pc with a bunch of antivirus & adware scanners can be a good idea too...even if they can't remove the file it might tell you what the bad file is then you can go into safe mode and delete it yourself...if it won't let you delete it then you might find a small removal tool online specific to that file...i just removed 3 regenerating popup dll files from my system the other day it was a real pain in the ass
