The Day The Earth Stood Still.

In any decent film class this movie would be used to explain why remakes are a bad idea.
Absolutely no redeeming value, the special effects are mediocre, the message is sophomoric and Jaden Smith made me want to pith myself.
In fact, were I Klaatu, Smith would have convinced me that mankind was not worth saving...sayanora and goodbye, whiners.

    Aaargh.

Fortunately, I was able to use The Escapist as a chaser and my faith in film was restored.
What appears at first to be a nice, tight little prison break movie turns into quite a bit more as the plot unfolds.
The British accents are almost inpenatrable at times- at least to the callow American ear- but the gist is easy to follow once you get the rhythm and the logic of the film (which is heavily crosscut) begins to unfold.

Referring to Guy Richie's oeuvre, I said that the Brits are now the masters of the hardboiled noir crime genre and The Escapist only reinforces my belief.
They seem to have a lot of fun along the way as well.

Max Payne (2008)- Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges.

Based on a (reputedly) popular video game, I had high expectations for Max based on its humble origins.
After all, we know from Boogie Nights that Wahlberg has an enormous dick and fromThat 70's Show that Kunis is obviously fuckable, so in a real video game adaptation there would be non-stop boning interspersed with improbably protracted gunplay.

Director John Moore decided to take the film in a different direction however.
In an early scene, Payne kicks a nearly nude and highly oversexed Russian babe out of his bed without laying so much as a finger on her.
I think this was meant to convey Payne's undying love for his slaughtered wife and his commitment to finding her killer but all it really does is establish that Max Payne is gay.

This is further reinforced when, over the course of the next hour and a half, Payne does not bone Mila Kunis's character Mona Sax.
    Not even once.

Two other things struck me about the film.
    -The weather.
In many scenes it is simultaneously raining AND snowing...this is just fucked up. Where the hell is this movie supposed to be taking place and what season is it supposed to be?
I know, I know...this is just nitpicking but I started expecting some apocolyptic End Of Days, Biblical shit to start coming down but apparently Wahlberg's contract specified that all that had to be saved for The Happening so there is no follow through.
Instead we get the Valkyries but they aren't nearly as scary as killer trees, are they.

    -Beau Bridges.
Obviously, younger brother Jeff was too busy creating the exact same character in Iron Man, so Beau got this part.
Beau however is chinless, and everybody knows that chinless people can't be trusted, so his big reveal as the villain surprises no one except those of us who fell asleep due to lack of Wahlberg/Kunis monkey sex during the previous hour of the film.
The logical choice for this role is Christopher Walken because what this film really needs is more cowbell.

I suppose there will be a sequel.
I'll probably watch it if only to see how an openly gay video game character deals with the Obama administration.
I can see a part it it for Beyonce.

    Oh, I feel dirty.

Terrific review clocker but you didn't give it a rating so I'm not sure how you really felt.

I just want to note that personally I'm of the honest belief that every(good looking) B movie actress be contractually obligated to do a nude scene.I mean it's false advertising otherwise .

B-movie = tits don't they teach these new directors anything in film school.

Speaking of directors John Moore must have tired of making terrible ,pointless remakes(like his self proclaimed idol Tony Scott who has remakes for The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Warriors in the works.I intend to kill him as so as I can find the time btw) so as diversion he decided to see if he could ruin a videogame franchise instead.
    He succeeded.
