The Wrestler , good movie .
Taken- Liam Neeson.
Neeson plays an ex-government operative (a "preventer", whatever that is) who's estranged daughter is kidnapped in Paris and sold into sexual slavery.
In another thread I discussed the contract that the viewer and the filmmaker must enter into as the theater goes dark- I suspend belief and you entertain me.
Different genres invoke different clauses in this contract and if we both do our parts, a good time is had by all.
Taken doesn't live up to it's end of the bargain.
Our hero has 96 hours to recover his daughter- during this time he will not sleep, eat, poop or in any way act human but still will not need a shave or look rumpled.
Check contract- oh, OK, that's allowed.
The French police are corrupt and incompetent but mainly not visible anywhere- don't need to check contract, this is a given.
Dozens of supposedly tough and scary Albanians will attempt to kill Neeson, he will escape without a scratch while they die in droves- right, I have a problem here.
Ooops, check the small print..."a man with a machine gun (subclause: many men with many submachine guns...) will fire thousands of rounds and not only fail to touch the hero but also leave his car functional and driveable"...oh crap, OK.
I'm beginning to regret signing up for this...
And so it goes as we approach the big (and completely inevitable) ending.
Spoiler: ShowSo, we're finally here...the auction of the abducted girls- to fat Arabs, who else?.
As the "product" is brought to the stage for bidding, the contract is irrevocably and cynically broken.
The girls are dressed in little harem outfits...no boobs, not even a nipple.
Apparently, the tough guys- the same ones who will kidnap girls from the airport, hook them on drugs and sell them into prostitution- are just a teensy bit prissy and won't strip them down for our prurient pleasure.
FAIL!
I'm calling my lawyer, this contract is void.
