I recently saw Fish Tankhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232776/. I found it far more realistic and telling of the times than any of the "reality tv" crap that has been going around over the past few years. This is a British movie and I have to say they seem to be putting out some watchable films lately. Harry Brown was also worthy of a viewing...
The IMDB tag says something about 15 year old Mia's life suddenly changes when her mother gets a new boyfriend. While this is true, it only covers one facet of this movie's range. TBH, I had to give it a second though before watching it as I have come across too many American movies that have a similar plot line and FAIL to go any further. Fortunately, I found this movie more about starting life with strikes against you and the things we do to move forward. Something like that anyway.
I say give it a shot. It is at least a 7.5 and maybe deserves higher for having such a real, yet uncomfortable feel to it. There are a couple VERY uncomfortable parts, BTW.
Another one:
Just finished watching Let the Right One In http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/ . Very good, understated, yet powerful film. A conservative 8.5, IMO. It's a Swedish vampire movie that is more fantasy/drama than gore. The special effects are subtle, but used appropriately.
