    I formatted the HD with partition magic and I'm now formatting the HD again with the Windows CD. So I think I can get it to work now

    you can run partition magic from a cd?
    if so that is indeed a smart trick.

    I used the hiren's boot cd.

    I had the same problem on my dad's computer twice since te summer.
    Realllly annoying to try and fix, I ended up putting the hard drive in my computer and scanning it both times (didn't have to format but i did last weekend so this wouldnt happen again).

    Ya the boot cd's are quite handy Barts has a few Fdisk utilities I use for these type of problems .
