I've never had to do it.

I'm giving my old PC to a friend so I'm going to do a reinstall and let her start from fresh.

Obviously, there are tons of walkthroughs on the web, but I still have a couple of questions:

    1. All I have is a Windows XP OEM disc. Is the fact that it's OEM going to cause some problems? Essentially, is the reinstall going to delete the boot info? That would be bad as the OEM disc doesn't have it.

    2. Anything else I need to know prior to doing this?

    format

Yea, with the increased hours at work, I haven't been able to keep up with my computer/software knowledge. I still wouldn't have known how to do this though. I've just never had to. I'm so careful with what goes on my PC that it's always kept very clean. I'm surprised at how fast one forgets this stuff if it's not used regularly.

My main worry was that it would delete the boot info. I'm glad I asked too as from what it looks like when you say "format", it will format the drive. I can't do that since my copy of XP is OEM.

The term OEM is used to differentiate that version of the software which is bundled with other hardware or software from that same software package sold on its own as a retail package.

For instance, when someone buys a Dell computer, they recieve a Windows disc included. It is not however a full copy, it's an OEM copy. All of the Windows information is on there, but the boot info, etc is not.

    No.

If it's a proper install disc, it can be exactly the same as any other copy of windows, only not supported by microsoft, since it's OEM, savvy?

    Definition, por Zed

In some cases, however, OEM copies come pre-installed, and the disc you get is a recovery disc, which I assume is what you are referring to.

In this case the "recovery" involved can be a reinstallation or installation, with or without a wipe of your previous settings and data, depending how mental the manufacturer is, I guess. If they happen to be a really playful bunch they might even make you download half of windows every time you need to reinstall (feels like it anyways, at those times).

A recovery oem install might also involve having all the drivers and crap extra software the manufacturer thinks you need installed, whether you like it or not.

However, getting back to the point: Make sure you know what you've got.
If you can boot from the CD (need to set things up in BIOS so you boot from the cd first, btw) and it behaves like any other windows disc it may well be that you can format, repartition, install and so on, to your heart's content.

(All these options will be available to you from the windows-disc.)

If not, and it's a recovery disc, try running it.

And obviously, if it doesn't remove all your old stuff, remove everything you've put in there yourself, then run the disc.

Ask a friend IRL if you aren't sure about what you are doing, btw. That's the best way of avoiding accidents.

None of these are helping me.

The computer I am trying to do this reinstall on was originally a Windows 98 PC and was upgraded to XP Home about 3 years ago. I no longer have the Win98 disc, and that's required for the reinstall. I do have a full copy of XP that I've used for my new PC, but I immediately get an error telling me that I can't use that version. I wouldn't have another product key anyhow.

I've tried downloading Windows 98 and tried that, but I the copy wouldn't work.

I think I'm going to have to try downloading another copy of 98 and trying again.

@Skizo. He does have a good point. I think you should try to get a Corp edition of XP instead of Win98.
