    I suggest you look at games being played on a widescreen before making a purchase.

    Yes. But a rectangle measured diagonally ends up being a smaller surface area than a square. So the fact that a widescreen monitor is a wider rectangle than a regular 4x3 screen format means that the widescreen ends up having a smaller surface area.

    It all comes down to mathematics (geometry).
