Yeah, I definitely do process them beforehand. I'm pretty strict with the tags as well, if not completely anal about it. I make sure that cover art and lyrics are attached, no comments, soundtracks defined by "(OST)", track numbers have padding when one-digit (01, 02, ...), etc.

I use Tag&Rename for all of that.

in the past ive spent time filling in the data in the mp3's before importing into iTunes, like i said, im anal about organization.
Torrents usually already have the artist and album name with them. But i agree if your downloading every song individually... this can get messy.

i haven't tried that program but http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm can read the all the file names you select and put everything into the id3 tag in a couple clicks. its so easy to use.

I'd buy it in a second. I still find it hard to believe that someone hasn't come up with a program that's smart enough to do that.

You can just edit it by renaming the actual file.
    or
in some cases right clicking the file and going to the properties of the particular files.
Yeah right. I just bought an 80gb iPod about 2 months ago so I can ditch my Nano. This way I can put all of my music on it, (68GB's worth) but so many of the tags are different. Any change in the names, even capitalization, spacing, etc will list the song/artist/genre differently.

When I want to listen to an artist I just want to find the name and see all of the songs for that person/group, but instead I see:

    linkin park
    Linkin Park
    linkinpark
    LinkinPark
    Linkinpark
    linkin_park
    Linkin_Park
    Linkin_park
    etc.

We want a program that will scan our music folder(s), then find those similarities and list them all and then give us the option of telling the program to name them all with the same artist's tag. The same can be true for the album title or genre. This way, I'll see all the songs by said artist at one time.

Screw trying to rename 68GB (16,000 songs) worth of music individually.

TagScanner 4.9 is very close to being able to do this, but not quite yet.

umm i think "vast majority" is a bit of an over statement, everytime i download from oink seems im always pulling my hair out because retards cant bother to name/tag things properly...i would say a decent percentage is tagged proper.

I agree. The interface is a lil cluttered but after you've used it for a while, tagging's a breeze. Earlier i was using the supertag feature in Musicmatch which is quite good too. The key is to tag your mp3's as soon as you've downloaded them coz once they accumulate, it becomes virtually impossible.
