As soon as a DVD is inserted into the drive the OS crashes and I have to re-boot the notebook. CDs work fine though.

    operating system: Win XP Pro
    the drive model is: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N
the current firmware version is: 1.17
    notebook arround 3 years old.

I tried looking for a newer firmware version but couldnt really find the right one.

    would appreciate any help.
    thanks!!

nothing, you can hear the dvd starting to spin in the drive and then it crashes before anything can launch.

    Edit:
a blue screen appears for a split second with white text from top to bottom.

    "there was a problem..."

I'd habe to boot it a thousand times to read the whole text.

    Then it reboots automatically.

You can turn off the automatic reboot.

    Start>Control Panel>System Properties>Advanced tab>Startup an Recovery settings>Remove the checkmark from [ ] Automatically Restart and click OK.

Now the error message should stay on your screen.

ok so this is what it says on the blue screen (summary/translation from german):

Windows shut down to prevent damage to the computer. If you are getting error for the first time you should reboot. If you keep getting this error:
Run hardware diagnosis (dont know how) and especially check for errors with the memory.
    Exchange video adapter.
Deactivate / deintall all newly installed hardware and drivers (nothing new was installed). Reboot computer. Press F8 to enter secure mode if needed to delete.

    Technichal information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007F (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

In autoplay options of the dirve I selected "no autolaunch of disc/do nothing" but it still crashed like before.

There are several possible causes of this fault, usually hardware problems.

Here's what microsoft have to say:
