Just wondering how many people on this forum are or were in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and other forms of defense for the United States or another country.

If you are/were, i have some questions.

    1. What were your reasons for joining?

    2. What did you expect, and what was it really like?

    3. Was it worth joining?

I used to be in the U.S. Army for 4yrs. . To answer your questions 1.) I joined for a couple of reasons, one because I had graduated for high school and was and needed to either get a job or go to college, and I was not prepared to go back to school, and it was an opportunity to serve my country. 2.) To be honest I really did not what to expect, during basic and the first 2 or 3 weeks of AIT it pretty much sucks because you are not aloud to do a whole only five minute phone calls to your family, but of course it gets alot better when you get to your permanent duty station. 3.) And on your third question in some ways it was worth it and in others it was not. It taught me alot of things like responsibilaty, to be accountable for my actions, teamwork, you know all that great adult stuff. But some times you get treated like crap, which can happen at any job, but it seems to happen more often in the Army. Like at your job if you something wrong they may say something to you, but in the Army the thing you hear most is drop and give me 20, 25, 30 whatever the feel is enough, that sucks. :beerchug:

    a. It was exactly what I expected and I got to travel.
    b. It's really like the USN says if your lucky as I was.
What I mean is I did'nt get stuck peeling potato's in Newark NJ.
    3. Yes is was worth it!
I did'nt like everything all the time but this is how life is.
I would'nt discourage anyone from joining.

    Thank you.

@ p_funk- DId you use the scholarship oppurtunity to go to college later on? Or did you stick with the army?

@ ShockAndAwe^i^ - What did you do exactly in your navy position? I don't know much about the navy. Do you go through basic training also?

    I was a Boastswains Mate.
    Yup I went through basic.
It was hard but the marines had it harder.
there base was right next to ours and we could see them on a ten mile run around a track with full gear in the hot sun.
Full gear means over 100 lbs of crap strapped to them
And they go through much worse than that.
The Iraqi army was no match for these guys.
But it's much safer in the USN.
You get to attack from a distance but not nessacerally a safe one.
I like the odds alot better!
Are you thinking of joining a service?

    the marines sounds tough

i'm only finishing my freshman year in HS right now, i'm just looking at all possibilites for my future, including the army.

I think it would be a great experience for me, and considering how my family is not doing well right now financially, I could use any benefits to help me get into college.
