i am encoding some small vcd quality clips. about 60 seconds each.
and i am looking for a good balance in filesize and quality, like what is the best bitrate to encode at?
i have about 12 clips and overall i dont wont them to be over about 40mb.

If the file sizes are small, the more the better, preferably at least over 1000. The only time I worry about bit rates is when I don't want to exceed a target size (i.e 2 disc).

the original clips are not very high quality to beginwith,
they are 60 sec mpegs. the default in divx is 780 when i start it up, but it gives guite high filesizes, is there anyway to work out the optimal encoding rate, for the quality of source u have?

Anything more than the original bit rate will not improve the quality.

    Video size: 352x288 (1150kbps)
    Audio: 44100hz, 16bps, 2ch (224kbps)
    Length: 0:00:40
    Bitrate: 1403kbps

this is what winamp gives as info. i ran it through tmpeg as pal vcd.
so what bitrate should i use for divx?

m8 those r spec of a standard vcd
if ur goin to avi u cant improve the quality the best ur get is file size .
just compress at the standard bitrate if ur not happy just lower it a bit,but the lower bitrate u go, u get better file size but decreaced quality.

i know, i ran them vids through tmpeg to create standard vcd spec.
i was just wonderin if anywone knew optimal setting, so i dont go over the quality needed, and vice versa.

M8 the best way would b to use a bitrate calalater like g/knot but i don't think it b suitable for small clips ,but u can find divx calalater s
about just enter the clip lenght and size u want to produce and it'il give u the right bitrate settin
