    1) remote desktop is for connecting to windows remotely.... for linux u can use putty which is a ssh client for windows ......

    2) utorrent is mainly for windows but u can use it on linux with the help of wine....
3)linux is much much more stable than windows
and last of all it takes sometime to get used to linux and once u get used to it ....there is no going back to windows as in my case
    No more trading....
Feel free to pm me for any help on installing TF on your linux seedbox

for all the seedbox newbies, i HIGHLY suggest you save yourself from all the trouble and just go ahead and pay the extra $15-$25/mo for Windows OS!

Just popping in to say thanks to the threadsarter! The info has been invaluable and I checked this thread over and over. I finally got my box setup and working properly after spending quite a bit of time looking into it and picking a host company for a dedicated server. After using my home connection for torrents the dedicated box speed pretty much made eyes pop out! I did follow the advice about spending a bit extra for Windows server. I'm using that plus uTorrent and it's working like magic :-)
Only problem now is that I'm getting impatient with the speed of downloading from the server to my home pc through FTP...;-) It's still fast but not after watching the torrents scream up and down on the seedbox....
I eded up with a "cheapish" server. P4, 1GB ram, 3TB bandwidth per month on a 100Mbps connection. The only thing I don't like is the small (80GB) HDD.
As tempting as some of the "umetered" deals were, it's a matter of them being a little too good to be true. My advice...Read the small print! Some of them explicitly say that they will restrict you if you use too much even if they sell you on "unmetered". At least with a monthly bandwidth type of deal, you know exactly what you will get and what it will cost you if you go over the limit. Your connection will also be very good and not as random seeming as the unmetered connections.

I'm giving bestofdata.com (reseller for dedibox) a shot right now and hope that it goes smoothly. I have heard that they will cancel service if you are over 25mbps 24/7, so I'll be watching that closely.

I gave valueserver.de a shot and was not very impressed. Their technical support was awful and, to make matters worse, I was never provided a password for mysqladmin that would have allowed me to add databases. As such, I could not install torrentflux.

By the way, I think some people need to make the distinction between "mbps" and "MBps". These are two very different things

Yes, a difference of 8X. "b"=bit, "B"=byte. The unmetered packages will not, well I suppose one can't say never, give you the spped that you think you are going to get and if you do start to use up too much of the shared line, they'll put the brakes on you. If a deal says 10mbps unmetered, it sounds good and a 100 sounds even better. Better than a home connection but you'll probably never see that speed and if you do happen to get on an "undersold" connection and get good speed, you won't have it for long.

I certainly am not foolish enough to think I can easily achieve 100mbps for $50 a month.

I get throttled quite heavily by my current ISP if I exceed 70GB of traffic in a 30 day period. A cheap seedbox is a great way for me to maintain good ratio on the many trackers I visit while still allowing normal home usage. Speed is not as much of a concern as traffic is.
