Serial # Generator

What is a serial number generator? is it easy to get caught with a generated number? What are the benifets, able to get updates? Any Drawbacks? Thanks

For different games/programs there are some serial number generators for programs that require a "key" or a "serial" to work at all, or work online, or work after a specific amount of time.

Most key generators just circle through a list of serials or keys or whatever programed into them. Sometimes (usually) these keys are already in use and so you can't do certain things (basically always involing online activity) other times though it doesn't matter how many people are using it so there are no limitations in automatic updates or online play.

Some key generators actually create original keys for the software this is done by generating random numbers and then trying them in a formula that says whether it is a good key. These keys/serials won't necessarily work though. The keygen for windows XP home/pro/corp will sometimes give incorrect keys. I don't know of any other generators that actually create keys so I can't tell you about others. These are pretty rare cause there hard to make I guess.

Other times it takes a name or machine id and process what the corresponding key/serial would be for that. These are pretty much always unique as computers don't generally have the same machine id (maybe they never do I'm not sure) and its not impossible but unlikely that someone else used the same name as you. Programs that use these you'll never have to worry about having a limitation except if in an update they change they way the serial is calculated and mail the new ones to people then you'll need to find a new key gen for the new version.

So in conclusion keygenerators kick ass and you usually won't have any problems with a serial from one of them. The most common problem will be not being able to play online in a game. The second would be problems updating but when that happens people comeout with a new keygen or crack for the updated version.

No Kris - I think you've got it spot-on

IMO always go for a keygen (the widely-accepted name for a serial number generator) over a crack any day; it's more simple and it helps maintain the stability of the program you're using it for (unlike some cracks which can bugger things up)

I currently have one from the Nero I just downloaded off of Kazaa. So it's good to know this is much better than a crack . The only thing is I'm having problems drag and droping my mp3's to burn as explained in my other topic.

I agree with the stability thing, but think that if you find a crack that works fine, it's still better than a serial/keygen, simply because it can't run out and you'll never have to bother with a code. However, you won't be able to update the program which uses a crack (unless you replace the cracked EXE with the original EXE first, and any other files that the crack edited).

P.S. No, you CAN'T get caught. Well, actually you can, but the chances are nearly zero unless you're in a college or something. Just don't worry about it. The worst thing that can happen is the software won't work.

hmm funny you should say that the program might just mess up. I just downloaded Nero yesterday with one of these things and I can get it to work correctly.

Heh - Now it's my turn to agree & argue.

I will admit that in some cases, cracks or cracked versions can be better than serials in that they can change the software for the better (most obvious example is KL). But AFAIK I do not know of a single program which has a limited-time serial system, with the exception of NAV's virus definition subscription service - and once the year on that's done, it's simple just to uninstall it and reinstall it

But that's a problem with cracks over serials - If you put a crack on a program and an update of the software appears, (except in the case extremely skillfully made cracks) good luck in updating it. If you use a serial, the software's not the wiser as it sees it as a fully-legal copy. Hence, 9 out of 10 times it'll accept any updates (I've had a few before you ask about that 1), which is why I have more of a fetish for serials than cracks

Metaphorically, it's a case of "if you want to get into a swank club, you can either barge through the front door, or you can dress up like a posh t**t and act all royal." Which is easier to get away with in the end?
