    Extreme Gaming, Ultimate Performance

The DimensionTM XPS is built for the hardcore gamer with XPS Technology that includes a new chassis design, specialized thermals to keep the system cool and quiet, power for the long haul, and the most engrossing realism in video and sound. With an Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor speeds up to 3GHz plus Hyper-Threading Technology with 800MHz Front Side Bus, extreme audio and graphics, and built-in 10/100 Ethernet for easy online connectivity, the XPS is ready to play.

    KEY FEATURES:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chassis Design: XPS systems are easy to open, upgrade and expand with the tool-less entry chassis. The chassis comes standard with, two front 2.0 USB ports, a front IEEE1394 port, and a headphone jack, which are easily accessible behind a fold-away door. Thermal control features include dedicated internal fans for the CPU, power supply and PCI & AGP cards. In addition, the power supply is in a separate compartment to minimize its effects on the system. The cable management system organizes multiple wires and allows for ease of system expansion.

Power Supply: The XPS is packed with 460W power supply that is located in a separate compartment along the bottom chassis to minimize the heat transferred to other critical components.

Cooling Systems: Two dedicated low profile fans quietly provide cooling to the power supply. Two additional chassis fans draw air across the CPU, keeping the system cool and quiet. One more fan drives air across the PCI and AGP cards to keep them cool while running.

XPS Support: The Dell XPS Support Team. Not just game savvy technicians, but serious players, too. When XPS customers dial the Dell Support 800# and enter their express service code, they are routed to a dedicated queue of special technicians specially trained on the Dimension XPS.

Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor speeds up to 3GHz with Hyper-Threading Technology, which allows high processing speeds for multiple applications. Intel processor also features 800Mhz Front Side Bus (FSB) and uses the Intel 875P chipset, including on-die 512K L2 cache for lightning-fast speed.

Memory: 512MB dual channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz is upgradeable to 2GB dual channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz for ultimate performance. For easy memory expansion, install 128MB, 256MB, or 512MB DDR SDRAM in pairs in the four accessible DIMM slots.

Storage: Ultra/ATA 100 EIDE hard drives from 120GB to 200GB at 7200RPM to meet your storage needs. Three internal 3.5-inch storage bays included for additional hard drive storage devices. All storage components are easily accessible with the new chassis design and cable management system for future expandability. Two integrated SATA (Serial ATA) ports are provided for future expansion with SATA drives.

Drive Bay Options: Three 5.25-inch drive bays for your choices from the following drives: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, CDRW/DVD combination (for creating custom data and audio CDs), and DVD+RW/+R (which allows you to write to DVD+R media). Also available on your Dimension XPS is an external 3.5-inch bay for a floppy drive.

Video Graphics: Advanced 128MB DDR 8X AGP ATITM RADEONTM 9800 Pro and 9800 graphics cards offer 8-pixel pipelines, providing high rendering power. ATI's 9800 Pro graphics are great for 3D graphics, intense gamers, robust color and clarity.

I/O Ports: Eight USB 2.0 (2 front/ 6 back) ports for instant flexibility and future expandability. In addition, a front IEEE 1394 port is standard on the front with a 2nd port on back. (See Product Views for details of I/O ports.)

Modem: V.90 DataFax Modem supports up to 56Kbps2 download and 33.6Kbps upload to provide basic data and fax modem functions. Upgrade to V.92 Capable Telephony Modem (up to 56Kpbs download and 33.Kbps upload), which also supports voice communication so you can take phone calls through your PC or use it as your phone and answering machine.

Connectivity: Built-in 10/100 Ethernet Networking makes the Dimension XPS broadband-ready for high-speed Internet access. Also available are New Dell Gigabit3 Ethernet NIC (10/100/1000) cards, for additional connectivity options.

Monitors: The Dimension XPS comes standard with a 19" (18" vis) CRT display or upgrade to the 21" (19.9" vis) for outstanding clarity. For super space-saving, choose a Flat Panel Monitors that are 6.7" thin available in 15" (15" vis), 17" (17" vis) and 21" (20.1" vis).

Sound: : Premium Creative® Audigy 2 sound card with DVD Audio paired with multimedia quality sound from Harman Kardon HK-395 speakers with subwoofers. Upgrade to Altec Lansing ADA-745 speakers for 3D gaming and movie watching. Altec Lansing THX® Certified ADA-995 speakers are six-piece set designed to deliver the home theater experience for ultimate gaming on your Dell computer.

Keyboard & Mouse: All Dimension desktops come standard with a color-coordinated Dell QuietKeyTM keyboard with adjustable typing angles, improved feel and PS2 compatible. The matching Dell PS/2 mouse provides a comfortable shape, which conforms to the palm, has 2-buttons, including the fast wheel scrolling which allows you to move through documents quickly. This would be better in the 'Hardwareworld'.

Why not build your own machine. You can then choose each part yourself and you don't pay for software you don't need.

In Hardwareworld there are guides now as to build your own PC.
I could't detect anything wrong with the Dell exept for the modem: 56k .

I'm afraid though to see its pricetag.

I would call the huge pricetag a key feature too. That and the fact that you could build a similar one yourself for much less!

It's the ad-speak in that last paragraph that gets me.

The campaign for clear English would probably re-word it to something like:-

The computer comes with a mouse and keyboard.
