What about FileList, -mp3 and -porn? They are really big and got ads on their sites.
Or bitmetv, where you can buy dl credit?
tl is good, it has many servers
i heard ThePirateBay makes 60 Grand a month from the advertisers on their site
thats some serious money
I would say that Pirate Bay is in a little bit different category then the sites that were originally discussed. It is a public site, login information is not necessary, you don't really have to worry about getting scammed on there. I believe it is true that they make a pile of money, but they aren't as much of a "community" as private sites. I couldn't imagine how much their server bills are each month, as well as their legal fees. Remember the bigger the sites, the more money they have to spend to keep up with the demand, I dont know their user count but I can imagine its HUGE, far more then most of the private communities that average between 20,000-50,000 users..
I would guess their ads are a source of safe revenue for them to cover their costs and make a little bit extra, the people donating to their site is usually for the cause, or for whatever big thing they are trying to accomplish ie; "Sealand" idea.. All the power too them though, they take a lot of the attention away from our smaller sites! :-P
There's nothing wrong with having ads on a site, I don't think its necessary to try to trick users into clicking on things or spamming them with links to other places. In the end it all comes down to the owners/staff decisions on how they want their site to be run. Some sites don't make enough donations and have to use ads to cover their costs or just want extra $ to upgrade and expand their sites..
I don't have any problem with ads and I think, I never see them anyway, using adblock & easylist.
To make money from ads you don't have to click on them, google pays according to views. I don't block ads so the site owners don't get paid per view, but because I find them waste of bandwidth & distractive.
