My laptop has what Belarc describes as a Generic DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device [CD-ROM Drive]
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-408N [CD-ROM Drive]

"My Computer" sees this drive thusly:

    DVD-RW Drive [F:]

    CD Drive [G:]

    and last, but not least,

    DVD Drive [H:]

    Wtf?

    Nope.

OS install saw it that way from the get-go.

    USB shows as [I:]

I never checked my MP3 player.

    BTW-

That's a beautiful sweater your cat is wearing.

Mine just shows up as one drive on this 'puter, but on others I've seen drives pop up as two (burner + cd-rom).

I used to reckon it was a Win98-thing (with certain manufacturers, or something), but maybe it happens on XP (if that's what you have) too, with some drives, or maybe it's a driver-thing, or a bios-thing.

If everything works, it may well be perfectly normal, I guess

I also think it might be more common with laptops (have seen it with laptops before), but I dunno why that might be.

Certainly sounds like a virtual drive.

That's the sort of description you get if you install software like Nero Image Drive or Daemon Tools.

The "Generic SCSI drive" gives it away as not being a real drive.

Err, you have tried to put a disc in it, right, J2?

(I got the impression it was all the same (physical) drive, and that he's sure about that )

Mine do this too, both are dvd drives and they just say "CD Drive". I'm not running any virtual drive apps either.
