I've seen this movie 3 times by now, and I still don't understand the meaning of that black monolyth at the end...
    Can someone explain?

Well, in Arthur C. Clarke's novel there were several of those black monolith's.
They were actually alien devices designed to educate and evolve early man.

Everytime a significant evolution of man happens they send a signal back to their alien origins.

Therefore, I think, the black monolith at the end represents the final evolution of humankind (Bowman being reborn into something more than human)

Damn you for explaining it to her, NotoriousBIC.

I was trying to lure her into watching it again (best SF movie of all time).

2001 is my favorite movie of all time. One of the great things about it is that it is very open to interpretation. It's terrible so few people seem to appreciate it now.

Black monoliths do not affect man only... Don't forget that there is one on Europa, and probably on a lot of planets with a newborn sapient species.

Damn good movie, I watch it at least once a year (even if there are still things I do not understand&#33! Forget the sequel, read the books instead!
