These days? Dirt cheap. Just make sure it'll do 100Mbit (I'm guessing you don't have gigabit in your house?) and you're all set.

You can totally use both devices that way if you'd like, too. No need to switch the network from one to the other. If you only have the one TV, it'd be hard, though.
Yeah they'll both be on the 65". Well I guess the only thing is to find a way to play my video ts files downstairs.

I've seen some media players that connect to your entertainment center but I need it to

    play DVD files
    play Xvid/Divx
    play in HD

Right now I either burn a DVD and play it on an upconvert DVD player or
transfer Xvid/Divx files to a USB key and upconvert it to HD on the same player.

I'd like to eliminate the player altogether.

External hard drives cost shit these days and even worse on Black Friday. I got a 400 gig USB drive for $100.

So I'd like to just have 2 steps

    1. rip my DVDs and download video files on my computer
    2. play them on my big screen TV

and poofpow that's it. I wanna simply call up all my files, select, and play.

Yeah. Sounds like you definitely want to either stream to your DVR in some way, or set up a media PC. There's always Windows MCE, but if you're a little bit tech savvy, MythTV is alot more flexible. And free.

Yeah I've been thinking about building a small form factor PC with multiple hard drives (I rather have multiple drives than have 1 TB drive).

I'd want maybe a total of 2 terabytes.
