Verizon has long told us they'll eventually migrate their FiOS network from BPON to GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) fiber technology, but they've been quiet on specifics -- until now. Their current BPON technology splits 622Mbps downstream and 155Mbps upstream among 32 users. GPON technology will allow them to offer 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream among 32-64 users (eliminating ATM, making it also more efficient). The company today issued a press release that says the new technology will first be deployed in Lewisville, Texas, early in the second quarter. Select Kirklyn, Pennsylvania customers will then see deployment over the summer.
