I agree with UKMAN that AVG Free edition coupled with spybot and registry mechanic and ad-aware do an excellent job.
Spybot is free to download www.spybot.com and ad-aware also has a free version .

I think NOD32, because it's easy on your computer, it's fast, clean and effective. And those are pretty much the things i value!

I have been using Avast (along with spyware doctor and registry mechanic and ad-aware) and i must say is great!!

AVG antivirus I'd say: http://www.freeapps.co.uk/apps/avg
Or ubuntu linux: http://www.ubuntu.org - then you don't have to worry about viruses
