Thread: uTorrent extremely slow

  1. #1
    Hi,
i am fairly new and now I am stuck trying o configure uTorrent (I use 1.6.1 on XP-SP2).
Right after I start the program, I hava alright DL speeds in the 100s kB/s but then after a minute or so, the DL speed decreases to 0. Then, every 15 minutes or so, a small chunk is downloaded at speeds around 15-25 kB/s.

I have already set up port FWDing in the router. I have set up a static IP. Still, no difference.

Do you have any suggestions what else I could do?

did you try turning on encryption?
in uTorrent: Options > Preferences > BitTorrent > Protocol Encryption
instead of "disabled" set it to "enabled" or "forced"

I'll give you my settings. They should work just fine.

    Port over 20.000
Global maximum number of connections: 1000
    Maximum number of peers/torrent: 200
Number of upload slots per torrent: 100
Use aditional upload slots if upload speed <90%
Queueing: max number of active : 200 ; maximum active downloads: 1 ( your choice here )
    Disk cache: override - 64 mb ( you can use 100 if you have 10 mbit+ )
Reduce memory usage when cache not needed
Other options in Disk Cache checked except write out untouched blocks every 2 minutes ( throttling the HDD imo ).
Advanced ( just listing changed options)
    - net.max_halfopen : 43
    - bt.prio_first_last_piece - True
    - Diskio.sparse_files - True

Encryption enabled, DHT & Peer Exchange off.

Have fun & Maxed out speeds for you dcat2

Dunno, just got 'em of the internets.
Check FAQ on www.utorrent.com, all the settings are explained over there.
That's IF you have time to waste.

    Make sure that both:

    (1) UTORRENT

    and the

    (2) PORT

that it is set up are added to your FIREWALL's Exception List.

And if you're using WiFi, make sure to configure and ENABLE your router's UPnP.

if utorrent is added, you don't need to add the port seperately. At least w/ xp sp2 and vista.

Don't open the port and use UPnP. Choose one, and IMO opening the port is much better.
