Thread: Router not as good as usb modem

  1. #1
I recently changed my old USB modem for a wireless router and my download speeds have dramatically reduced. I have done several speed tests and the upload rate has remained the same but the download speeds are roughly half what they used to be.

Theoretically I should be able to get 8mb. I have never gotten that sort of speed but I can't understand why a change of hardware would make such a significant difference.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem?

Well, what router are you using and what speed is it being used at? If you're only using it at 11Mbps then it wouldn't be as high as if you were using it at 54Mbps.

Have you opened ports for your download software?

If not, you will not be "connectable", which will reduce your incoming (download) speed. Your outgoing (upload) speed is not affected because you are the one making the connection.

Here's some info on how to set up port forwarding, most routers are covered.

    .
Political correctness is based on the principle that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
