    rmvb . avi . agm .......... etc

    and working with no problems

    K-lite mega codec pack is the best for me, but they exist many alternatives.

    .avi is not a codec, it's a container format .
    you can have avi files with xvid, divx or x264 codec and the extension would still be avi.
    I recommend the KMPlayer or VLC if you dont want to mess around with codecs and filters (codec packs).
    Otherwise MPC + ffdshow + coreavc (for x264) is a good option

    I use FFDShow, CoreAVC and Nvidia Pure Video. Everything runs sweet over here
