What do you think was a moment that defined Music History? I think that Nirvana coming into the music scene, was a great moment that defined Music. It killed the Hair Bands of the 80's and brought in a new style of music, Alternative.

The Vietnam War (or conflict, if you prefer).
things are quiet until hitler decides he'd like to invade russia
so, he does
the russians are like "OMG WTF D00DZ, STOP TKING"
and the germans are still like "omg ph34r n00bz"
the russians fall back, all the way to moscow
and then they all begin h4xing, which brings on the russian winter
the germans are like "wtf, h4x"

and ppl saw him dancing was a big thing, maybe it didnt define the Music, but sure it did define atleast one thing:
Sex Sells.
Music with heavy dose on Sexuality seems to be the fuel
on a lot of the so called Popular-Music these days.
Not bad from a man who didnt write his own music.
But defining one single event on Music history is pretty tuff question, i dont
really know the answer, I only know the Music that define great turning points
as I understand itself.
Personally i dont think Nirvana killed any Hair-bands as
you so respectfully claim, only thing that died was Mr.Cobain.
And if i remember, their drummer had some hair too.
Is there bands who really says they are Alternative any more? Or
has the alternative music changed to something else?
I ask cuz i dont know any and i like alternative music.
