I have broadband too, but not XP.

This explains the confusion.

My broadband cannot be disconnected from my Win98 - unless i simply take the plug out of the cable modem and put it back in again - DirectConnect makes no difference if its on or not.
The broadband line is essentialy "online" 24/7 anyway, you can use your phone at the same time, its not like 56k.
Anyway, confusion explained.

It probably has to do with the lease time for your ip....
normally it's set to 2 weeks. If you login again within that time the server give you back the ip you had before...

btw of course it's not forbidden to tell him...
