I register a lot of software I've "picked up".
As long as you aren't proffiting from it's use or sale, it's not worth the time or effort for most to do anything more than add an update which unregisters you.
Obviously if you choose an over used number you'll be challenged when trying to register and some numbers are deavtivated by registration.
You'd probably get harsher treatment if you get caught stealing Cable TV signal!
If you author cracks or keygens for the purpose of unauthorised use or distribution of copyrighted software( obviously ) then you might expect a knock on the door.
