How Do I Make A Windows 2000 Bootable?

ALL version of Windows 2000 Proffesional which I have found can only be run from windows,I need one which runs from DOS so how do I make them bootable?

You don't have to make it bootable either. Just go into the BIOS and have it boot from the cd drive.

That one is for Windows 2000but my version is Windows 2000 Pro so does that works using that guide?

And is there no guide to just make it bootable without service packs?

You really shouldn't make it bootable. NT systems shouldn't be installed as C:\WINNT .

Installing from a minimal win9x partition gives you the option to boot from the win9x files on C: using the NT bootloader but still boot TO any NT partition anywhere on the drive.
If you install Win2k to C: and a hacker types in C:\WINNT and you're not tight, guess what happens!
Change the install path and name in the advanced options when you start the CD install in win9x.
Try an instal to partition S:\WINTER or some other unique location. Most viruses and hackers will give up and leave when they don't find it. Very few programs need a C: to install in Win2k. If they do, you might want to reconsider before installing them!

You could change the win9x default name from "windows" too but some crappy older games can't figure that one out.

Windows 2000 is obselete try XP if possible!

I have 2 computers,1 with XP and one with Windows 98.

The one with Windows 98 have no internet connection so no hacker can break in and it´s a old one too,only 400 MHZ,that´s why I think upgrading to Win2k is better than XP.

Is there no guide to makea bootable cd for Win2k Pro cause the one from the link above is for regular Win2k?

Win2k Pro is the basic system. there is no "just Win2k".

If all you're doing is installing it, just grab the 4 boot floppys to start it with.


Disk 1 - cdboot1.img
- Disk 2 - cdboot2.img
- Disk 3 - cdboot3.img
- Disk 4 - cdboot4.img
- Disk utils to create Win2K disks from cdboot images.
( If you are using *nix you can write back these disk images using any bit copy program such as dd. Thanks to Andy Longton for pointing this out. )

I don´t know how to use those and I want a clean reinstallation,I want to format my computer and then install Win2k so it that possible with those files?

I only know how to format a partion and then run "d:\setup" from DOS but the CD I have now can´t do that thing.it only run from windows.

Download all 5 files to a folder. Run the 5th file and follow the instructions.
It'll ask for a floppy( 4 of them ) label them 1 thru 4.
When all 4 are done, Put #1 in and the win2k CD and reboot.
It only takes a few minutes to feed the floppys and then it starts the CD install. Note these are only for win2k Pro so you should label them win2kPro to avoid problems later.

Do you have Service pack 3 yet? you should install that as soon as Win2k starts the first time, before you do anything else.

This is the SP3 admin version, a few more options but essentially the same protection.
