I'm on ADSL 512/256 and I was wondering if the bandwidth is treated as 768Kbps overall? So therefore, uploads will not be affected if you are downloading, but of course they will if you're surfing the 'net. Am I right?

Yes. ADSL downstream and upstream values are separate.

edit: bah, my answer was too longwinded... i'll just write the simple version--
yeah they are basically separate, but with ADSL you should throttle the uploads (in whatever program you're using) to slightly slower than your maximum speed... because maxing out the upload bandwidth can negatively affect your downloads. but using up all your download bandwidth should not affect the uploads.
okay, that's better.

ADSL => Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line { 8Mbps / 1.2Mbps MAX }
SDSL => Symmentric Digital Subscriber Line { 2Mbps / 2Mbps MAX }

yeah, my bad, it's "symmetric" not "synchronous." tho sync would make sense too.
