quasiantidisestablishmentarianism is right, most films you can watch with friends and totally fall into the typical macho way of thinking whereby, you dont get scared at all, but if you watch blair witch for example especially for the first time alone, and you've ever been lost in the woods, or have any experience of how alien the woods can feel to you then it's gonna be scary. It's all about personal experience and tollerance, i mean you can take the piss out of someone for being scared by one particular film, but when it comes down to it we all have our own particular buttons.

Blair Bitch Project sucked and I was pissed as hell for seeing at the movies. My chick at the time dragged me in. I only liked 2 scenes. The sounds of the kids outside of the tent with the girl whining and the end when the guy wouldn't turn around and the girl got clocked.

busyman, thats the whole point, for me the film isn't about how scary for the average viewer it is, it's about the way it makes you feel if you try to associate your self with the characters, if you try and immerse yourself in the film without a woman on your shoulder jumping at every branch that gets snapped you get in to the weird chlaustrophobic(sorry) atmosphere of the film and you can associate with the characers. Plus those two scenes were the best/scariest in the movie.

P.S. if your american, then at least you got to watch it at the movies before the bubble was burst and the film makers told you it was all fake unlike us poor bastards in england who have to wait for an age before anything comes out over here and the film makers have already disclosed that it was all all just a film.

    Sorry for the long rant

uhhh.....sorry I didn't like it. I don't like a movie for two scenes. Furthermore, I like most knew it was fake. Who the hell would film some shit (especially at those angles) while their life was really in danger. The Americans who believed that shit were utterly stupid and gullible. To top it off they followed it with a even more boneheaded sequel. Blair Bitch was like Sony's PS2.....pure marketing genius!!!!

I just saw Mothman last night, alone, and it succeeded in creeping me out. Especially since many of the events depicted were real. Many people in Point Pleasant did have mothman sightings and other unusual occourances regularly between 1966 and 1967, the year of the tragedy on the Ohio River, which is also real. The only really obvious differences between the real events and the movie are that the movie takes place in the present day, and in the real disaster the body count was ten higher. Keep that in mind while you watch the movie, look for the little glimpses you see in reflecting objects and it will creep you out.

As for blair witch I never saw it but they used to show a softcore porno version of Blair Witch on Cinemax and it was actually pretty funny.

Another one was called "the Blair Bitch Project"...

Anyway, back to the topic: try and find "Kaïro" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa... Japanese movie, 10 times better than "Ringu" ( the ring )

I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard that this new Japanese horror flick called "Dark Water" is also very scary, even more so than Ringu. And yes Ringu was scary, especially the scene in the end with the girl and the TV. I don't want to give it away. Anyway, you have to watch these things alone! In a group, group psychology takes over and almost anything becomes acceptable. For instance, all the crazy stuff people do at rock concerts or soccer games, or how in combat some people even lose their fear of tangible death. They are able to do these things because everyone else is and vice versa. When you watch a movie with friends you can't be the only one who is scared, that is unnacceptable to almost everyone's ego. So you laugh and joke and you never really get into the movie, they do too and that supports you. This is great for comedies, but for horror, what's the point if you can't get scared? You're just wasting your own time, and it won't ever be as scary if you watch it alone the second time, since you know what will happen.
