The further into the thread, the time when Kazaa (though i dare say it's mostly K-Lite) is said to have been good drifts from 2-3 to 7-8 years
K-Lite (both Random Nuts' 2.0-based or Nsanes' 2.7-based) were good P2P programs for older (one should read this as "more popular/widely spread" rather than of certian age, though it's not a farfetched opinion) files. And with hashcodes and some nod-jumping getting sources for your download wasn't so much of a problem.
As for the viruses/trojans/maleware:
It is not unheard of to download such from torrents and the use of unmodded (i.e. loader, blacklist tool) Kazaa bundled with GAIN is the trademark of the unaware or fools. Everybody's been a newbie, some are just too ignorant to change.
Back to the topic.
I remember the times when K-Lite has shown that, at peak times, there were over 4.5 milions of other users. Though that was about 6 years ago, and todays .5 milions don't sound impressing, it is a possibility that a large portion of the userbase is, in any way, fond of the program and share valuable files.
This is not an eMule thread.
