Yeah I never understood the logic in that. I've always thought its to elongate the period the kicker has to be nervous. Is there any concrete evidence or historical data to support the effectiveness of this strategy though? But I suppose if its at the end of regulation, then there's really nothing to lose for the team calling the timeout. At the same time, the kicker could use that extra time to collect himself if he was a anxious to begin with.
